Club Information and History

Folkestone Carnival 2006 Jiving on CadillacFolkestone Rock 'N' Roll Club was founded in 1992 after I (Vonnie) met Peter Bradley at the Leas Bar in Folkestone. I had returned to my roots in the '50's (after my husband died and the children had flown the nest) going to the Leas Bar and Jiving with a friend. The people at the bar continually asked me to be teach them to Jive, which I had done in my far distant past.

Peter and I were offered the Social Centre in Folkestone free use for 3 months, and if successful a hire fee would be charged. We called ourselves Folkestone Rock 'N' Roll Club and on Wednesdays I taught jive whilst Peter spun the wax? Peter booked bands once a month and from these humble beginnings we entered carnivals, demonstrated dance in the Town and supported charities. We were so successful that we outgrew the Social Centre. We checked for larger venues and were offered the East Cliff Pavilion. The venue was free for the first 3 months and then if successful a fee would be charged.

Folkestone Carnival 2006 TeenyboppersIn the year 2000 the East Cliff Lease was coming to an end for the proprietors who were not renewing. We then moved to our present venue the Dover Harbour Board Sports and Social Centre at Whitfield nr Dover and Peter re-named the club, Folkestone Dover & Deal Rock 'N' Roll Club. Jim and Joanne Quinn Jive Champions 1997 have taken over the jive lessons, which are on wednesday club nights from 7pm to 8pm.

The club has a real family atmosphere, which has continually grown in strength from the early club years, through to the present club members. We are also very proud of our many young rock 'n' rollers, who are an ever present at all the clubs events.

Annual club membership is only £5. Please click here for our Band and Club Night entry prices.

Folkestone Carnival 2006 JiversThe club has a good history of successful carnivals. The first year that the club entered a carnival we won first prize and had a ball. Since the first carnival success, we have continually entered the Folkestone Carnival, in which we have always done well because of the music and pure enjoyment in doing our dancing. At this carnival we have not only won 1st prize but have won Spirit of Carnival.

Folkestone Carnival 2006 CadillacThe Club Members built the Pink Cadillac in the unused wing of the East Cliff Pavilion and everybody contributed so much of their time and expertise, it was like a family. The Cadillac was entered for the first time in the Hythe Venetian Fete on the Military Canal. It was a wonderful sight, with music playing and dancers doing the glorious dancing. We managed to come 3rd which was wonderful.

In 1998 we entered the Notting Hill Carnival with 85 dancers and two bands Blastoff and The Riverboys and stole the show.

The club has hosted a great number of events for charity, including The Folkestone Flood Appeal, where we held a big event on the Cheriton Road Football Ground to help after the deluge that lost a great number of people their homes and belongings.

A Charity Dance for Sebastian, a young lad in Cheriton who lost limbs through meningitis.

We organised an event for Children in Need with Barry Bethel as compere and Graham Fenton with the Original Matchbox playing.

The Club still supports charitable events and recently danced at the Hospice in Canterbury and thanks to our members (who are truly supportive) whom without we would not be able to do.

Since we started we have raised over Over £50,000 raised for charity for charity.
